How to Build a Following on Twitter

In this post, I’m going to briefly talk about building a Twitter following. Of all the social media sites, Twitter is one of the most important when it comes to SEO. Tweeters are more active in connecting with strangers and sharing links than Facebook or other social media sites.

Even though I wasn’t super crazy about Twitter when I first discovered it, I find myself using it more and more. I have a few accounts with thousands of followers, which is kind of cool. Occasionally, they retweet my stuff, share, and message me.

These activities have helped me get more traffic and followers to my site. Here are a few quick ideas for getting started on Twitter:

1. Make sure your tweets are valuable and not self promotional. I rarely use Twitter to try and sell anything. I would say at least 90% of your tweets should be non-promotional.

2. Reply to people if they tweet you. This lets them know that you are a real person that they can connect with.

3. Link to your Twitter profile on your other properties. This includes your website, Facebook, business cards, and anywhere else other people might find you.

4. Tweet regularly – Whether it’s once a week or daily, make sure you tweet regularly. Consistency is key and the more you tweet, the more your following will grow. Of course, it is better to do fewer quality tweets than tweet often. With my largest account with over 5,000 followers, I only tweet once a week.

5. Participate in the conversation – Try to tweet with other active twitterers. Don’t be afraid to tweet with people with large followings, especially if they are active in conversing in the Twitter community.

6. Retweet valuable content – People will actually follow you and thank you for retweeting content. This is also helpful for your followers.

7. Follow other people of interest – Some people will follow you back just because you followed them.

In summary, these are just a few ways to build a Twitter following. It’s not hard to do, but takes time and persistence and it can be one of the more entertaining forms of marketing yourself and your business.
